Humble, comfortable, sustainable, relaxing, cozy.

Our Resort has 15 spacious bungalows with garden or valley view.

Honai means house in the local language.

Tours & packages

Adventurous, immersive, private, unforgettable.

Our Resort serves as a base for day trips in the Baliem Valley or longer expeditions throughout Papua. With one of our private, all-inclusive packages, organised by our Papua Explorer travel agency, you can discover the Baliem Valley while we take care of everything.

Restaurant & museum

From our restaurant you will enjoy probably the best view of the Baliem Valley. It also hosts one of the largest exhibitions of traditional art in all of New Guinea.

We source most of the ingredients for our freshly prepared dishes from surrounding farmers.

A picture says more than words, and a video says more than pictures.

What you see in this video: Our restaurant/lobby with view and art exhibition, the inner wild garden with the bungalows, and the bungalows from inside. Perfectly imperfect.

The background music is a traditional song of the Dani tribe people.

Frequently asked questions

We usually take care of you the moment you arrive at Wamena airport (airport code: WMX). All flights to Wamena depart from Jayapura (airport code: DJJ). There are mainly two airlines operating on this route: WingsAir and TriganaAir. As a rule of thumb, you should arrive in Jayapura before 14:00 so that you can continue your flight to Wamena on the same day. The website traveloka(dot)com is the best platform for booking domestic flights in Indonesia.

Fill the contact form, tell us what you like to do, your travel dates, number of people, and we will get back to you. We will answer quickly with a straightforward reply. Travel packages are offered by our travel agency Papua Explorer

Most guests discover the Baliem Valley through a selection of excursions. Other guests prefer longer treks. There are many adventurous things to do. To ensure a good quality of service, it is advisable to book a tour package before you arrive. For an overview of some of our packages and excursions, please click here: Tours & Packages

In urban areas in Papua disturbances sometimes occur. The Baliem Valley is not such an area. The Baliem Valley is a tranquil place and our resort is surrounded by friendly and supportive villages. Most of our staff are local Papuan from the area. We consider the Baliem Valley to be a very safe place to visit. In addition, please note that all foreigners wishing to visit Papua and the Baliem Valley must apply for a travel permit called a surat jalan. This permit would not be issued if the authorities considered it unsafe to travel. As the application process can be lengthy, we usually arrange this permit for our guests before they arrive.

Indonesian and English.

Yes we have free wifi. The best connection is from the lobby/restaurant. There is no wifi connection in the bungalows. The mobile phone network in the resort is usually good (4G).

Our Resort is situated in idyllic nature, surrounded by villages of the locals. The Resort owns 1000+ hectares of private land. This land is left in its natural state and protected from deforestation and destruction. Moreover, a large part of our staff comes from the surrounding area, we receive our resources from there, we are a direct supporter of the local population, and have been for 20 years.

All excursions are organised especially for you. You have your own guide and vehicle. The only exception are pig festivals, where we put guests together in small groups if possible. During the Wamena Festival all activities are done in small groups unless we confirmed you otherwise.

Of course they are. But as our Resort does not meet international safety standards, parents must watch their children. For younger children we can provide extra beds in your bungalow.

At the moment we can only accept payments in cash in Rupiah. Therefore, we ask you to pay in advance, and we prefer to fix your program in advance. Payments in advance can be made via bank transfer.

That depends. A pig festival, for example, gives you a great opportunity to take pictures. You come as a guest and are treated as such in a friendly way. People you meet by chance, on the other hand, will most likely demand payment or even refuse a photo altogether. If you are unsure, ask your “subject” before taking the photo.

In our restaurant we serve mainly Indonesian food. For lunch and dinner, rice, potatoes and all kinds of vegetables are the main ingredients. Most of the vegetables and fruit come from the farmers in our direct neighbourhood. We also serve meat or fish from the market. Our breakfast is similar to an American breakfast, but mostly vegetarian. We are sure you will enjoy it.

We can certainly cater for a vegetarian or vegan diet. Many of our dishes are based on freshly cooked vegetables, rice and potatoes. If you have food allergies, we can provide meals specially prepared for you. In severe cases it may be advisable for you to bring your own food or ingredients. If you are in any doubt about this, please check with us during the booking process.
